Subject: [*] BBEdit Updater: 2.5.1 to 2.5.2 -repost-
The previously submitted BinHex of this 2.5.2 to 2.5.2 updater
was somehow smashed during upload; here is a corrected copy.
(If it's not too much trouble, please substitute the abstract
>From the previous posting - thanks).
[How can I refuse when someone says "thanks?" -- isl]
The attached BinHex file contains a StuffIt Deluxe archive which in
turn contains an updater which will update the 2.5.1 release of BBEdit
into the current 2.5.2 revision. (If you have the original 2.5
release, do not use this updater; a separate one is being posted).
This updater is also available for anonymous FTP from world.std.com,

Subject: [*] MacMiNT Release
Below is the latest release of MacMiNT. I believe it is finally
ready for general use. There are still bugs, but they seem to be
rare and don't seem to be catastrophic. Still, MacMiNT should be
used at your own risk.
MacMiNT is a preemptive multitasking OS that runs as a process under
the Mac OS. It is a port of MiNT 0.95 from the Atari ST. MiNT
extends the Atari OS to support many UNIX like features. Many UNIX
tools have been ported to MiNT, including gcc (v2.4.5), make, tcsh,
and emacs.
MacMiNT should be able to run on anything from a MacPlus with 2M ram
and 3M disk space, on up to a Quadra with a ton of ram and a ton of
disk space. But, I wouldn't bother with anything less than a MacII
with 8M ram and 15M disk space. The default installation requires 5M
free ram and 12M free disk space. If you don't use the default
installation you could probably get away with a lot less ram and a lot
less disk space.
There is little to no documentation on MacMiNT. To use MacMiNT you
should already be familiar with UNIX, or you should be prepared to do
a lot of searching for documentation.
MacMiNT is available at: suniams1.statistik.tu-muenchen.de in
/pub/mac/MacMiNT/MacMiNT.13October93, nic.switch.ch in
/software/mac/src/macmint, and archive.cis.ohio-state.edu in
/pub/mac-unix/macmint.
The distribution contains only the minimum files needed to get
started. Several other packages will have to be retrieved from the
network before doing a full installation.

Version 1.3.2 -- Released 10/93
-- Fixed a bug that would cause Maelstrom to display colors
incorrectly if you had a multiple monitor system, and were playing
Maelstrom on a monitor that is not the main monitor AND changed the
sound volume right before you started playing the game.
-- With many thanks to Radius Developer Services, Maelstrom now
*really* does work with the Radius Pivot monitor, and other
configurations with non-standard video.

Subject: [*] Shutdown FX 1.1 (INIT)
Shutdown FX is a simple INIT which will, at shutdown, clear the Mac
screen with an interesting graphic effect. It picks randomly from 8
of the effects that are included in MSG Demo. (Note that the MSG Demo
is NOT required to use Shutdown FX. This INIT will work on its own; it
just reuses some of the same code as MSG Demo.)
Shutdown FX should work on any Macintosh under any system. The only
known flaw is that on systems with multiple monitors, only the main
monitor (the one with the menu bar) is cleared; all other monitors
are left untouched. If you find any other bugs, or if you have any
comments, please e-mail the author at f8dy@netaxs.com (Mark Pilgrim).
Version 1.1 fixes a bug when shutting down with applications still
running. (Sometimes only part of the screen was wiped to black.)
This INIT is free; there is no shareware fee. This archive contains
only the INIT itself. Complete source code is available and will be

Subject: (A) hyph.off in QXP / (A) no HD icon
Hello from Brazil!
Here are aswers for two questions I've seen on info-mac:
> Is there any way of turning hyphenation completely off in Quark?
Using Portuguese with Quark 3.1 and not owning a Portuguese dictionary,
I too had the need for turning off hyphenation, so I hunted around those
option screens until I came up with this:
Select H&J from the Edit menu
Select 'standard' (or any other) from the list
Click Edit
Uncheck the 'auto hyphenation' box
> ...make disappear the icon of the startup disk drive?
I managed to make my HD icon disappear with ResEdit. My icon is a custom
one (pasted through the sys 7 Get Info box). I dont know if this method
will work with a standard icon, but you can always paste a custom one on
top of it.
Open ResEdit and find a file named 'icon' on the root level of your HD.
Open this file and double click on any of the icon resources.
On the editing window that appears, delete the icon mask.
Save changes and quit.
Rebuild the Desktop file
Voila' - no HD icon!
Hope these help!

Subject: (Q) Apple A/UX on Higher Ed Purchase Prog?
Hi all!
I recently ordered a Mac Quadra 650 8/500 from the apple Via the HEP II
program. In that order I listed A/UX CD rom product as one of the things I
wanted to order.
I had found the Product code in an older listing of the Hi Ed List,
and wrote it down, figuring that the worst thing that could happen was that
the price would go down (was listed at ~$450.00). Well, I called the Apple
people who deal with the Individual Purchase items (800-877-4433) and they
told me that A/UX was not available through them. Apple does not carry their
own A/UX OS?
I was told I might have to go out and by it commerically. Anyone know
if:
(a) The HEP people really do sell A/UX and the representative just could
not find it in her computer for some reason?
(b) Where can I buy A/UX on CD Rom?
(c) What is a ballpark price for the CD rom product?
Thanks in advance! :)

(Q) PM 5.0 Font Problem
The following is a message sent to me by one of my users:
"As far as I can tell, PageMaker 5.0 has a bug that causes it to crash
when asked to download certain fonts.
One possible work-around would be to manually download the font.
PageMaker 5.0 ships with the LaserWriter 8.0 print driver (so there's
no longer a choice of the Aldus or Apple driver), and I don't have a
LaserWriter font utility that will recognize the 8.0 driver.
Can you give me a utility for downloading fonts that would be
compatible with the 8.0 driver? Thanks.
BTW, I can download and print the same document just fine from
PageMaker 4.2, which led to my conclusion that it's a PM 5.0 bug."
Can anyone offer an explanation or a solution? TIA!

My IIci, for no reason I can think of, has stopped printing (claims the
StyeWriter is not there... but it is, the cable buzzes out OK, and the
printer self-check works). The communication programs can't get to the
modem (Kermit and Zterm both lock up). Tattletale lists the ports with
the usual info. To get out of the comm programs I had to use the
programmers' switch; the interrupt location was in vsync_wait someplace.
This happens with two different sets of system 7.1 software, and with
all extensions (except StyleWriter) off. Chooser chooses OK.
Am I stuck with buying a motherboard? Can the serial chip be replaced?

Subject: Advice on Small Networks
I would appreciate some advice on setting up a small Mac network. Please
forgive my niavete about this sort of thing - any references to FAQs that I
should be reading would be much appreciated.
WHAT WE ARE: We are a small, non-profit community center located in a poor,
inner-city neighborhood in Durham, NC. We provide educational and recreational
opportunities to disadvantaged youth, including after-school activities, job
training, drug/pregnancy counseling, etc. We have a small paid staff in a
small
facility and, of course, almost no money.
WHAT WE WANT: We would like to have a Mac-based cluster of computers for the
kids to use. They would be using educational/recreational software, typing
programs and other software for job skills, etc. Additionally, we want to use
a
Mac to run the everyday business of the center.
WHAT WE HAVE: We have a small grant which will fund the purchase of a single
respectable desk-top setup - something like a Centris 610 and laser printer.
We
intend for this to be primarily used by adults for business stuff.
Additionally, we have 2 Mac Pluses (one with hard disk), 2 512K's, and an
Imagewriter. These items have come as donations and we anticipate more of the
same. (This is an advertisement, by the way: If you know of any old Mac
systems
or peripherals that can be donated to a worthwhile 501c-3 tax deductable
charity, PLEASE get in touch!).
WHAT I WANT TO KNOW: Is there an inexpensive and worthwhile way to take
advantage of the higher-end Mac (and laser printer) to provide the kids with
the best resources and performance on the lower-end macs? Is it worth setting
up an AppleTalk (or other) network? Specifically:
- What is the minimum system/ram/hard disk configuration for the "terminals"?
- What is the optimum configuration for the "server"?
- Can the server provide processing power as well as file sharing?
- Is there cheap software/hardware other than Apple Talk? (no, we can't afford
ethernet)
- Any ideas for sources of donated macs or small hard disks?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or ideas. Please reply by e-mail, as I
don't browse this newsgroup very often.

Subject: Are there other programs like SendPS?
There is a utility named SendPS that was written several years ago by someone
at Adobe. It was used to download Postscript over AppleTalk, such as sending
a
Postscript file to a printer. The latest version seems to be v. 2.0.
This version of SendPS does not work with System 7. Can anyone direct me to
an equivalent utility that is free, and works with System 7? I know that this
can be done with Apple's LaserWriter Utility, but I can't use that. I need
to give this utility to students, and LaserWriter Utility has several options
that students could really mess things up with.
I have searched ftp.adobe.com and I can't find a newer version of SendPS.

Excellent advice. However, does anybody have a tool to do the font-check
quickly? Hand checking when you have close to 6MB in the Fonts folder is
not a viable idea, and Norton Utilities doesn't catch all the instances of
corruption.
If there is no such tool, could a kind developer consider such a
contribution for the Mac community ? This is a recurrent problem: I've had
the CarolesChunk font go bad on me two times now, requiring reinstallation.
In these cases, Norton only reported a "bad bundle bit", but never
mentioned that the contents of the file were also screwed up.

Folks -
I quess I missed the ideas some of you have come up with for resurecting
dead internal HD's. The HD on my SE-30 (orignal equipment) has died. I
mean the light come on and nothing happens. Eventually a ? comes up with
the poor thing telling me it ain't got no drive to boot from. All the
utilitiues I've used come up with nothing. VIF's that I created for such
an emergency tell me that the poor thing is just not responding. I've
thought about opening up the computer and giving the drive a gentle whack,
but that seems just a little risky.
Any suggestions??
I seem to remember that the drive that were installed in the SE-30's had
a lubricant problem. Did anything ever come out of that, a cure??
I am kind of resigned that I might have to replace the HD with a new HD.
La Cie is selling a Quantum ELS 170 MB for $200. Any comments. I'm
actually leaning to getting an external (pulling the old one looks pretty
complicated) and pulling the plug (literally) on the old one so the computer
won't look for the old one. Any comments about that?
Anyone have experience replacing an HD in an SE-30? Was it as hard as it
looks? Any tricks?
Thanks. I know it's a lot of questions

Well I can only apologise for that. It's a joke for those who know me, and in
the States you may not even have seen the children's TV program it refers to.
Sometimes I forget it's there, although with my e-mail address included I
could
never truly with-hold my name, could I?
>Hippy Wabbit chooses to attack Ken Linger as being childish and without a

I'll concede that the wording could be rather 'robust' for some, but the
opinions behind it I stand by. I can't see any reason to elevate a machine to
the status of a religion, except when your livelihood depends on selling the
thing. Such extreme brand loyalty I can only see as laughable at best. Out

worst.

My original remark was:-

Ken Linger's piece actually invited flames, on the claim that he enjoys them.
That being the case, I sincerely hope that he found mine funnier than Bruce

The reason I didn't write to Info-mac in the first place is that I am

This is my original letter:
Hello,
I am having problems restoring some files that I archived in 1990 using Sum
Utilities version 2.1.
I am able to launch the program and set up the menu to restore. The
program simply reads the directory then says how many files I have and says
it is finished with no files restored.
I would like to retrieve the files. Do you have any suggestions or a
retrieval utility in case the archive is damaged.
I archived it with version 2.1
My serial number is: D.TX138.M

If someone coult give Symantic a wake up call or help me directly I would

Don't know if this might help. I had a similar problem with two IBM 9370
mainframes wired into the Internet.
It seems that the size of the packets you are sending out is too big. When
you do a ping or other transmission activity that only results in a small
packet, it gets thru without problems, but when the packets grow bigger (as
in a TELNET or FTP transaction), these get chopped up and transmission
hangs with both hosts madly retransmitting the mangled packet. The problem
stems in that one end sends packets larger than the other can process, and
the other cannot or will not indicate the fact.
Dunno if InterSLIP can be adjusted for this, but I solved the problem with
my 9370's by reducing the packet size on the configuration file (using
IBM's FAL). If you can play with this, do a trial-and-error till you obtain
the maximum packet size the link will let you get away with, so you can
maximize link throughput. Keywords like MTU, RWIN, MAXSEG and others come
to mind.
Now that I remember, I had the same gremlin pop up when I set up an
Arcnet-Ethernet IP bridge for our Novell'ers, using Phil Karn's NOS. There,
the maximum packet size turned out to be 340 bytes or so, whereas on the
9370's it was 560'ish. Later on, a cisco upgrade was installed and the
9370's were finally able to pump out at 1,500.

Neither do I ! LW 8.0 has proven to be at least 20% faster than the 7.x
family at our installation, and 8.1.1 seems to be even better. What's more,
when we recently acquired an HP LaserJet 4m with integrated Appletalk, I
was extremely satisfied to have our Macs happily printing on the machine,
using its full capabilities, just as soon as I copied the PPD file from the
manufacturer's installation diskette and ran Setup on 8.1.1. Later
inspection of the remainder of said diskette uncovered an ancient 7.0
driver and accompanying PrintMonitor that proved to be totally unnecessary.
Word of warning regarding PPD files. Many times they come with their short
(DOS?) names and LW 8.x will fail to locate the proper one. Either select
the sucker manually or rename them to the official (long) name. If you open
them with TeachText or similar text editor, you'll find the longname in a

Because only my Mac's screen is involved, I certainly wouldn't think any

Naturally, I could use something like Adobe Premiere, but that's a bit of
overkill for this.
Anyone know of any good utilities to do this?

Subject: regarding language translators
In issue 209 of the Digest, linguist Duncan Markham wrote of his skepticism
concerning the ability of translation software to render a competent
translation:

reaction

As a profesional translator and owner of a translation company, I was
curious. So I phoned the vendor (Globalink) and received a fax containing
some information, parts of which are quoted below:
"Power Translator Professional features:
- Translation speed of up to 20,000 + words/hour
- Bidirectional translations
- Bilingual screen option
- Bilingual manual
- Add-on Subject Dictionaries for technical, industry or
profession-specific words and phrases: create your own or buy one
ready-made from Globalink
- Alternative Translation/Synonym reference feature with pop-up window
- Pull-down menu for Alternative Translations/Synonyms from dictionary to
edit on the translation screen
- Compatible with most popular OCR software and virtually all scanners
- User-modifiable general dictionaries of over 250,000+ words
- Single word and semantic unit dictionaries
- Convenient User Dictionary allows recording of user modifications
- Selection of General Dictionary or Subject Dictionary from dictionary
update screen or translation screen
- Access any word processor from menu
- Accepts text file from any word processor
- Rapid, simplified dictionary update procedure, with improved interface
- Automatic morphological inflection in dictionary update
- Automatic Possible Part of Speech feature
- Multiple translations based on part of speech
(noun/verb/adjective/adverb), further enhanced with multiple (subject
Dictionary) capability
- On-screen linking and display of related terms
- Variable translation of prepositions
- Automatic inflection of semantic units (singular to plural, infinitive to
conjugated form)
- Preferred translation selection option
- Idiomatic expressions in Semantic Unit Dictionary
- Alphabetical browsing
- Interactive or batch translation modes
- Batch mode translation options including editor and full text modes
- On-screen editing of source of target text
- Automatic verb conjugation
- Automatic pluralization
- Flagging and reporting of unfound words/phrase for easy dictionary
update
- Increased speed of translation with longer texts
- Suspend translation feature to allow words or phrases to remain
untranslated (e.g., proper names, addresses, trademarks, etc.)
- Text entry of foreign characters from English keyboard or appropriate
foreign keyboard."
The above is verbatim from the vendor fax, which also includes claims that
thousands of Unix, OS/2 and DOS users around the world are happy with the
product. Does anyone out there know one such user? By the way, it seems
that this software was originally designed for use by the military --why
would an "Infantry" (sic) dictionary be already compiled and listed among
available dictionaries?
Examples of the capabilities of the program are included. I quote them to
give native speakers an opportunity to appraise them:
"French to English:
Veulliez nous crediter du montant indique sur le releve ci-joint./Please
credit us the amount indicated on the statement enclosed.
English to French:
We enclose our quarterly bulletin listing our recent accomplishments./Vous
trouverez ci-inclus notre bulletin trimestriel enumerant nos
accomplissements recents.
English to German:
Please make sure that the goods arrive in good condition and on
time./Stellen Sie bitte sicher, dass die Guter in gutem Zustand und
punktlich ankommen.
German to English:
Sie konnen sich auf die prompte und sorgfaltige Ausfuhrung [1 wd.
illegible] Auftrags verlassen./You-They can rely on the prompt and careful
completion of your order.
English to Spanish:
Please send the goods in accordance with the enclosed instructions./Por
favor enviar las mercaderias segun las instrucciones adjuntadas.
Spanish to English:
La maquina que usted fabrica en la fabrica cumple el requerimiento./The
machine that you manufacture in the factory fulfills the requirement."
Etc. Although I may be wrong, from these examples it would appear that the
software is intended to handle workaday material, but not anything more
complicated than billing or business letters.
Now, the business of translation is to render meaning, not words, and it is
not clear to me that this is accomplished. Although the claims are
attractive, they of course must be taken with a pinch --or perhaps a lot--
of salt. The US$1,195 price tag (which includes two "Subject Dictionaries"
of your choice) is steep for something which may not be that useful. An
appraisal from an actual user might help shed some light, and I invite
fellow netters to post (or e-mail to me) anything they find on the
subject.

Subject: SpeedyFinder7 - another conflict
I stopped using this cp sometime ago as it was the cause of a
freeze-up that occurred when trying to print from within Excel. Since this
*only* happened with Excel and not with other programs, it's difficult to
know which of SpeedyFinder7 or Excel are guilty of going into the dark
recesses of the Mac OS where no self-respecting creature would even dare
look.. Thing is, we *need* Excel so we dumped SpeedyFinder7 which is a bit
of a pity as two of its features are especially good:
- eliminating the finder's rename delay
- faster network copying
- substituting default programs for opening TEXT and PICT and even
other file types (ex:setting Word to load when you double-click a MacWrite
file.
Apple, why leave OS improvements to people like Aladdin and Now
software. Competent as they are, it's surely better if the OS creator
improves the system from the ground up rather than having to rely on an
increasing number of bolt-ons?

I posted this question last week that I wasn't able to share my StyleWriter II

I'd like to be able to share my printer over the net, but when I try to
activate
the print share option in the chooser, I get an dialog box telling me that
there
is not enough memory and I should quit applications. I get this same message
with all applications closed, even after restart. Even after disabling all my
extentions. I was able to share my printer once, the first time I ever tried
it, but the next time I started up my computer I had this problem. After I
reinstalled the printer software, I was able to share the printer but the next
time I turned on my computer the problem returned. So if I reinstall the
printer software each time I use my computer, it will work, but that's not any
fun. I guess this is a problem with the printer software since it hasn't been
updated since the Stylewriter II first came out. Or is there an update of the
Stylewriter driver that I don't know about?
I would appreciate any suggestions or comments.
Thank you in advance.

I was rather miffed that the new printer driver wasn't on the Apple FTP

What's up with that?

Subject: Text file pager for Mac (Q)
I just found myself in need of something useful, and since I can't
think of what program will do what I want, I thought I would ask the
net.
I just got a _lot_ of almost-plain-text ascii material on CD-ROM that
I would like to read. I could print some of it out, but given that the
text consists of a half-dozen science fiction novels and related
materials, printing becomes a time consuming and expensive
proposition.
What I need is a simple pager program, like 'more', 'most' and 'less'
on UNIX systems. While there are plenty of fine programs for _editing_
text, there are none (that I know of) for simply viewing and reading
text. Optimally, the pager/viewer would have a few useful features:
- A user-defined "page key" that advances the text exactly one page
forward. When reading a large amount of material, there's no reason
to take the time or effort to use the mouse.
- User-settable font and style (so text can be set to large & bold
for easy viewing).
- Optionally, it should be able to interpret the standard ASCII
printer control characters... newpage (^L), backspace (^H),
etc the way 'less' does.
- Optionally, it should also automatically recognize and properly
format non-Mac newline characters, ^J for UNIX and ^J^M for DOS.
- An RTF interpreter would be nice too... but perhaps I ask for
too much :-)
Does such a beast exist? If so, just tell me about it an I'll shut up :-)
I will, of course, forward my findings to the net.

I've had a little chat with Pete in private, and we seem to agree that for
producing technical documents of the finest quality, TeX/LaTeX is your only
man (as they say over here in Dublin*). _I_ think that if you use the Alpha
editor (25 US dollars shareware), LaTeX becomes as easy to use as
Microsloth Word (and a sight more bug-free), but I'm not 100% sure that
Pete agrees with me on this point. One thing I feel you _do_ need is
processing power (at least an LCIII class machine) to make the system
reasonably interactive (but then that's true of Word 5.1, as well).

Sheesh, what a silly idea. Is he getting a kickback from the other dealers,

According Macworld Macintosh Secrets, you need PageMaker 4.2 or newer to

How does it perform? Word, as I have commented here before, is a

this reason alone.
Is it file format compatible with the Windows and DOS versions of
WordPerfect? Word has always made this claim, but has always fallen

What I think Andy is talking about is using the Frame command (known in
Word 4 as Postion). Usually, when you frame a paragraph in Word
(Insert/Frame), Word places a "frame" around the paragraph, and then you
can use Print Preview to drag the frame about or adjust the frame using
Format/Frame.The framed paragraph moves along with the frame as you move
the frame around. Got that? :-)
Word wraps non-framed text around framed paragraphs, and this (though
clumsy) works reasonably well for, say, wacking a graphic in the middle of
the page and having text wrap around it.
You can position multiple frames so that their locations overlap. Frames
cannot wrap around one another, so - in theory - they should overlap. In
practice, Word gives mixed and sometimes inexplicable results when you
overlap frames. I certainly wouldn't count on it working in any sort of
time-sensitive situation.
So, if you want text to overlap some item in Word (4 or 5), you can stick
the item in the header and set the top margin (Format/Document) to an exact
measurement (you have to set it to exact so that the header doesn't push
the text down too far). In Word 5, you can choose exact from a popdown
menu; in Word 4, you enter a negative number in the top margin box, say -1
for "exactly one inch." You can then stick postscript code in the header to
print a largish, grayed out DRAFT (or whatever text you desire) or you can
put a graphic (or a large, bordered, table cell to make a full-page border)
or what have you in the header. Word (like most Mac programs :-)) can't do
display PostScript, so if you use the PostScript code method - as Andy
notes - you can't see the result of the code until you print to a
PostScript printer. If you use non-PostScript code - a graphic of some sort
perhaps - you are likely to see a decent representation in Print Preview,
though not normal or page layout view.
Conclusion? For Andy (or anyone like Andy) to solve the problem, you can
either:
1. Use a different program...
2. Consider making a graphic having the word DRAFT and placing that in the
header.
3. Experiment with frames, but prepare for frustration.
Finally, if anyone does know of a neat way to make the frames behave as
Andy describes, I'd love to know about it.
